Inat!
Arsenal need to toughen up!
Inat (pronounced ee-naht) is a uniquely Serbian term for a profound, often defiant form of stubbornness, spite, or pride — rooted in facing immense adversity. It signifies acting “out of spite” to achieve something, regardless of consequences or opposition, and is often seen as a cultural, psychological response to historical hardship.
Sports-wise, a player who embodies this grit and unrelenting will to win is Nikola Jokic, NBA player for the Denver Nuggets (also owned by the Kroenkes). But he deserves his own series of articles… later.
After a gut-wrenching loss, Arsenal need to pick themselves up and crack on, in spite of the noise. Taunts from pundits and fans alike ring loudly. Take a stroll through the internet streets and you’ll hear it all: Bridesmaids FC, Set Piece FC, Haram Ball, and the latest — Own Goal FC 🤣
Today’s football fandom zeitgeist is about echoing mostly ill-informed narratives, with the sole intent of inflicting maximum damage on opposition fans. Sadly for Arsenal supporters, this isn’t going away anytime soon.
Winning is all that matters, and Arsenal are still in a strong position to shut some people up. Top spot in the Premier League — albeit with a gap that should have been greater — and realistic chances of silverware in three other competitions. I’ll take that any day.
Arteta’s charges need to understand that this is no time to feel sorry for themselves or cower under the weight of expectation, but instead to wear that bridesmaid gown or dress all the way to the pinnacle.
Next up, Arsenal head to Elland Road to take on Leeds United — a chance to right the ship. The offensive numbers (goals and assists) from the attacking players aren’t good enough. Saka, Martinelli, Gyökeres, Trossard, and the captain Ødegaard all need to step up.
Set pieces are useful for tipping the scales and gaining marginal edges, but relying on corners as the main strategy doesn’t feel sustainable. And honestly, a goal from open play is simply more enjoyable to watch.
As for the fans, there will be more losses this season. Meeting rough patches with meltdowns feels like carrying one’s own fire into hell.
I, for one, choose Inat till the end.
